She is the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Venus
being her equivalent in Roman mythology. In some accounts she was
the daughter of Zeus and Dione; in others she was said to have sprung from the
foam of the sea. She was the irresistible goddess who stole away even
the wits of the wise by wiles and by her sweet, mocking laughter.
Sometimes she appears as the wife of Hephaestus (Vulcan), the lame and ugly god
of the forge. She is also the mother of Eros (Cupid), the lover of
Ares (Mars), and the one that bore Aeneas by Anchises. To her Paris
awarded the golden apple inscribed “for the fairest.” And her bribe or reward for this was
