He was a friend or servant of Alcmene, who bore Zeus' son Heracles.   While Alcmene was in labor, Zeus' jealous wife Hera (or, in one version, the Moerae) came to prevent the delivery by clasping her thighs.   To foil Hera (or the Fates), Galinthias ran out shouting that Alcmene had given birth to a child.   This so startled Hera (or the old women) that the clasping was relaxed and the child was born.   Finally, Galinthias was transformed into a weasel (or a lizard).
