He was a perfect knight of the Round Table. One Christmas Eve, a Green Knight came to challenge King Arthur's court to a beheading contest. The Green Knight said he would receive the first stroke on the condition that the beheader should receive the courterstroke one year from that time at the Green Chapel. Gawain beheaded him, but he calmly picked up his head and went away on his green horse. One year later Gawain kept the tryst. But he was wounded only slightly in the neck because he had resisted some temptations.
