He was a satyr.   Once Athena threw away her flute because flute-playing distorted her face and made her appear undignified.   The satyr picked up the flute and made himself an enchanting flute-player.   Then he challenged Apollo to a contest of musical skill.  Apollo won, of course, and he punished Marsyas by flaying him.

1.      “He was a satyr”:他是個「沙特」(半人半羊的林中小神)

2.      “Once Athena threw away her flute because flute-playing distorted her face and made her appear undignified”:有ㄧ次,Athena 丟棄她的笛子,因為吹笛子扭曲她的臉而使她顯得沒尊嚴。 “flute”:笛子 (據說是 Athena 發明的) “distort”:扭曲。 “undignified”:沒尊嚴。

3.      “The satyr picked up the flute and made himself an enchanting flute-player”:那沙特撿起那笛子,而使自己成為一個迷人的吹笛者。 “enchanting”:令人著迷的。

4.      “Then he challenged Apollo to a contest of musical skill”:然後他挑戰 Apollo 比賽音樂技巧。 “challenge sb.  to sth.”:挑戰某人進行某件事。

5.      “Apollo won, of course, and he punished Marsyas by flaying him”:阿波羅當然贏,而他處罰 Marsyas 藉由剝他的皮。 “flay”:剝皮。
