He was king of Crete. At his request Poseidon sent a
bull from the sea to be sacrificed, but the bull was such a splendid
creature that Minos did not sacrifice it. Offended, Poseidon caused Pasiphaë, Minos' wife, to fall in love with the bull and give birth to
the Minotaur. In making war on Athens, Minos lost his son Androgeus but
won a victory. As atonement for his son's death, he demanded that
Athens send Crete a yearly tribute of young men and young women to be
sacrificed to the Minotaur. This grisly and humiliating tribute was
duly paid until Theseus came and slew the monster.
1.
“At his request Poseidon sent a bull from the sea to be
“at one's request”:應某人之要求。
2.
“but the bull was such a splendid creature that Minos did not
3.
“Offended, Poseidon caused Pasiphaë, Minos' wife, to fall in love
with the bull and give birth to the Minotaur”:由於被冒犯,所以 Poseidon 使 Pasiphaë
(Minos
Minotaur
Offended
= Being offended = As he was offended
4.
“In making war on Athens, Minos lost his son Androgeus but won a
5.
“As atonement for his son's death, he demanded that Athens send
“should”。
6.
“a yearly tribute of young men and young women to be sacrificed
7.
“This grisly and humiliating tribute was duly paid until Theseus
came and slew the monster”:這個可怕的、羞辱的貢獻被按時付給,直到 Theseus 來殺了那妖怪。
