It was the winged horse, the offspring of Poseidon,
which sprang from the blood of the decapitated Gorgon, Medusa. It was originally the horse that bore Zeus' thunderbolt. And for a time it
was the mount of Bellerophon, who captured it with a golden bridle given
by Athena. With the aid of Pegasus, Bellerophon fought the Chimera and
the Amazons. But when, in overweening pride, Bellerophon tried to ride
it up to heaven, Pegasus threw him to his death. The horse was tamed by
Athena and presented by her to the Muses. With a stroke of its hoof on
Mount Helicon it brought forth the gushing fountain of Hippocrene which
was able to inspire poets.
