He was son of Tantalus and father of Atreus.   When he was an infant, his father slew him, boiled him in a cauldron, and served him as food to the gods to test their omniscience.   After punishing Tantalus for this atrocious act, the gods restored Pelops to life.   But one of Pelops' shoulders became an ivory one they made for him, because the absent-minded Demeter had eaten that part of him in her grief for the disappearance of her daughter Persephone.

3.      “But one of Pelops' shoulders became an ivory one they made for him”：可是， Pelops 的ㄧ個肩膀變成他們為他製造的象牙的肩膀。 “an ivory one” =  an ivory shoulder (象牙肩膀)。

4.      “because the absent-minded Demeter had eaten that part of him in her grief for the disappearance of her daughter Persephone”：因為那心不在焉的 Demeter (地母)已經吃掉他的那個部位，在她因為女兒 Persephone 的失蹤而哀傷時。

     據說：Persephone 是 被冥王 Hades 強暴而帶到地獄去當夫人。
