唸音

He was son of Tantalus and father of Atreus.   When he was an infant, his father slew him, boiled him in a cauldron, and served him as food to the gods to test their omniscience.   After punishing Tantalus for this atrocious act, the gods restored Pelops to life.   But one of Pelops' shoulders became an ivory one they made for him, because the absent-minded Demeter had eaten that part of him in her grief for the disappearance of her daughter Persephone.

[解說]

1.      “ When he was an infant, his father slew him, boiled him in a cauldron, and served him as food to the gods to test their omniscience”:當他是嬰兒時,他父親殺死他,放他在大鍋裡煮,而把他當食物供給眾神吃,以便測試祂們是否全知。  “cauldron” =  caldron:大鍋。  “omniscience”:全知、無所不知。

2.      “After punishing Tantalus for this atrocious act, the gods restored Pelops to life”:在因為這殘酷的行為而處罰 Tantalus 之後,眾神恢復 Pelops 的性命。 “atrocious”:凶暴的、殘酷的。

3.      “But one of Pelops' shoulders became an ivory one they made for him”:可是, Pelops 的ㄧ個肩膀變成他們為他製造的象牙的肩膀。 “an ivory one” =  an ivory shoulder (象牙肩膀)

4.      “because the absent-minded Demeter had eaten that part of him in her grief for the disappearance of her daughter Persephone”:因為那心不在焉的 Demeter (地母)已經吃掉他的那個部位,在她因為女兒 Persephone 的失蹤而哀傷時。

     據說Persephone 是 被冥王 Hades 強暴而帶到地獄去當夫人。
