It is said to be a bird which lived for five hundred years at a time, somewhere in the Arabian wilderness.   At the end of that time, it built its own funeral pyre of gums and spices, lighted the pyre with the beating of its wings, and was consumed to ashes.   Out of the ashes, then, grew a new Phoenix which, in time, repeated the process.
