Called Mars in Roman mythology,
Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera. As the god of war, he was brutal,
ferocious and blusterous, but in fact cowardly at times. No immortals
loved him except Eris (the goddess of discord) and Aphrodite (the
goddess of love). He had an illicit love affair with Aphrodite, whose
husband Hephaestus then made a subtle net and caught the lovers. I t
became a great scandal on Olympus when the lovers were exposed in
flagrante delicto: the gods crowded in from everywhere to watch the
spectacle with merriment though the goddesses shunned it with modesty. But Hephaestus refrained from divorcing his wife because he loved her
too much to do so. Meanwhile, Ares had three children by her.
