She was a nymph attendant upon Artemis.  The river god Alpheus pursued her hotly, and her mistress changed her into a fountain which bubbled up as a spring in Ortygia.   However, Alpheus changed himself back into a river and, in his strong determination, flowed from Greece under the sea to the Sicilian island to mingle his waters with hers.

1.      “She was a nymph attendant upon Artemis”:她是伺候 Artemis 的女神。 “nymph”:林泉河海之女神。 “attendant (up)on” “wait (up)on”:伺候。

2.      “The river god Alpheus pursued her hotly”:河神 Alpheus 熱烈地追求她。

3.      “and her mistress changed her into a fountain which bubbled up as a spring in Ortygia”:而她的女主人把她變成ㄧ道泉水,成為在 Ortygia 地方以水泡浮現的泉水。 “bubble up”:成為水泡而浮現。 fountain =  spring:泉水。 Ortygia是西西里島上形成 Syracuse 城的小島。

4.      “However, Alpheus changed himself back into a river”:可是,Alpheus 自己變回一條河流。

5.      “and, in his strong determination, flowed from Greece under the sea to the Sicilian island”:而以他最強大的決心,從希臘經過海底流到那西西里的島嶼。

6.      “to mingle his waters with hers”:要混合他的水以及她的。 “waters”:指一股ㄧ股流動的水時,可有複數。
