She was daughter of Minos and sister of Phaedra.   She fell in love with Theseus at first sight when he and other young victims were paraded to the Labyrinth to be devoured by the Minotaur.   With a ball of thread to give him the clue, she helped Theseus escape from the Labyrinth after he battered the monster to death.   Theseus had promised to marry her, but he abandoned her on the island of Naxos instead of carrying her back to Athens.   Dionysus found her and comforted her, and she found solace in his love. 

[解說]

1.      “She was daughter of Minos and sister of Phaedra”:她是 Minos 的女兒,Phaedra 的姊姊。 MinosCrete 島的國王。

2.      “She fell in love with Theseus at first sight”:她ㄧ見就愛上 Theseus.  “ at first sight”:一看見時。

3.      “when he and other young victims were paraded to the Labyrinth”:當他和其他年輕的犧牲者被遊行到迷宮去時。 當時 Athens 每年都要送ㄧ批年輕人當犧牲者,去給 Crete 島上的 Minotaur 吃掉。而 Minos Daedalus 在島上建一個迷宮 (labyrinth),把 Minotaur 和犧牲者都關在其中。 “parade”:遊行。

4.      “to be devoured by the Minotaur”:要被 Minotaur 吞噬。 Minotaur 為半人半牛之妖怪。

5.      “With a ball of thread to give him the clue”:以一個線球來給他線索。 “clue”:指逃離迷宮的「線索」。

6.      “she helped Theseus escape from the Labyrinth”:她幫忙 Theseus 逃離那迷宮。

7.      “after he battered the monster to death”:在他擊死妖怪之後。 “batter”:用力連續重擊。

8.      “Theseus had promised to marry her” Theseus 曾答應過要娶她。

9.      “but he abandoned her on the island of Naxos”:但他遺棄她在 Naxos 島上。 “abandon”:放棄、遺棄。

10.  “instead of carrying her back to Athens”:而沒帶她回到 Athens

11.  “Dionysus found her and comforted her” Dionysus 看到她而安慰她。
