唸音

He was the seer who foretold the necessity of sacrificing Iphigenia before the Greeks went for the Trojan War.   An oracle, however, had foretold that he would die when he met a greater seer than himself.   And this he did when he met Mopsus, who could tell the number of figs on a tree while he could not.

[解說]

1.      “He was the seer who foretold the necessity of sacrificing Iphigenia before the Greeks went for the Trojan War”:他是那位先知,他預告:希臘人去打特洛伊戰爭前必須先犧牲 Iphigenia “foretold”:預告。 “seer”:先知。 希臘聯軍統帥Agamemnon 得罪了女神 Artemis,犧牲其女 Iphigenia 之後,船隊才得順風出發。

2.      “An oracle, however, had foretold that he would die when he met a greater seer than himself”:可是,有個神諭預告說:當他遇到比他自己更偉大的先知時,他就會死去。 “oracle”:神諭。

3.      “And this he did when he met Mopsus”:而這件事他做了,當他遇到 Mopsus時。 “And this he did” =  And he did this,「做此事」即「遇到更偉大的人而死去」。

4.      “who could tell the number of figs on a tree while he could not”:他 (Mopsus) 能說出某樹上無花果的數目而他卻不能。
