She was a virgin huntress and warrior allied to Turnus. Her father Metabus reared her in a remote wilderness. As a baby she had learned to shoot down the swift-flying crane or the wild swan. She herself was no less swift of foot than the birds of wing. In fact, she was so light of foot that she scarcely bent the stalks as she hurried over the fields of grain and she could skim dry-foot over the surface of the water. Once, however, her father fastened her to a spear and threw it together with her across a river in order to save her from their pursuing enemies.
