He was a Titan who overthrew his father Uranus and got control of the universe. It had been foretold that he would likewise be overthrown by one of his children. Therefore, he swallowed all the Olympians he begot by his consort Rhea. But in actuality Zeus, the last-born, was spared because Rhea had substituted a stone in swaddling clothes for him and had him reared in a secret cave on the island of Crete. When eventually Zeus came back and defeated his father, Cronus (or Cronos) was made to vomit up the Olympians.
