An English learner came across the term “flash drive” and was puzzled about its meaning. He consulted a large dictionary but could not find it as an entry. He thought, then, that he could only guess its meaning by combining the definition of “flash” with that of “drive.” After studying carefully the dictionary meanings of the two words, he said to himself: “Well, it must be a fast way of driving a sports car, or it may be a road for racing cars.” Later, however, a computernik explained to him: “It is, in fact, a USB flash drive, that is, a flash memory data storage device integrated with a universal serial bus.” On hearing this explanation, the English learner remarked: “Can a bus run as fast as a flash of light?”
