Ellen was actually not a Helen. She was only a fond lover of electric appliances. Knowing her fondness, Bob had bought her a number of electric conveniences including electric stove, electric blanket, electric fan, electric washer, etc. But Ellen was still complaining: “This is an electric age, isn't it? Can't you buy something for me?” Bob was so irritated that he broke loose and cried out, “Yes, I know you've come to the electric age. I'll buy you an electric chair, O.K.?”
[译注] 艾伦实际上不是个海伦。她只是痴爱电器用品。因为知道她的痴迷,包伯所以买了一大堆电动的便利用品给她,包括电炉、电毯、电扇、电动洗衣机等等。可是艾伦仍然埋怨说:「这是电器时代,不是吗?你不能为我买个东西吗?」包伯被惹得如此生气,以至于他便脱了缰而喊出:「是的,我知道你已经到了电器的年龄了,我就买给你一张电椅,好吗?」 注: 1. Ellen 原为 Helen 之变体字,此 Ellen 只要 Electric appliances, 并不是传说中的美女 Helen. 2. fond (痴爱、痴迷的), electric age (电器时代/电器年龄), irritate (惹生气), break loose (脱缰,挣脱束敷), electric chair (用以处死之电椅)。
