God created human beings by baking clay figures. At first, He applied too much heat in the kiln, and, as the figures were overbaked, they all turned black. This is the origin of the black race. For the next batch, He was overcautious and did not apply enough heat. This time the figures were underbaked and came out too pale. This is the origin of the white race. For the third batch, God applied just the right amount of heat and the figures all came out golden brown. This is the right complexion and the origin of the yellow race, according to the Chinese belief.
[译注] 上帝靠烧烤泥土人样而创造人类。起先，祂在窑里用太多热度，而因为人样被烘焙过度，他们都变成黑色。这就是黑色人种的来源。下一批时，祂过分小心而没有用足够的热度。这次人样烧烤不够而结果太过苍白。这就是白色人种的来源。在第三批时，上帝用刚好正确的火侯，而人样结果都是金黄棕色。按照中国人的信仰，这是正确的肤色，也是黄色人种的来源。 注： kiln (窑)， overbake (烧烤过度)， underbake (烧烤不足)， overcautious (过分小心)， a batch (一批)， come out (结果)， complexion (肤色)。
