[J-78]   For Quake's Sake

During the first few years after I moved to the quake-prone state of California, I was so afraid of earthquakes that any suspected quake could cause a panic on me.  But my friend Linda had no such phobia since she was born there and had got used to that natural phenomenon.

One day I was in Linda's car.  When the car stopped at the red light, it shook sort of violently.  Linda became very nervous.  I stuttered out: Are-are-are you qui-quivering for-for-for quake's sake?  It-it-it is really a-a-a terrible earthquake!

Thank Goodness! Linda became relaxed.  I had thought my car was breaking down.

注: quake-prone (容易发生地震的) suspected (察觉到的、怀疑到的) panic (恐慌) phobia (恐惧症) phenomenon (现象) sort of =  somewhat (有一点) stutter out (口吃说出) quiver =  tremble =  shudder (发抖) relaxed (轻松) break down ()
