During
the first few years after I moved to the quake-prone state of
One day I was in Linda's car. When the car stopped at the red light, it shook sort of violently. Linda became very nervous. I stuttered out: “Are-are-are you qui-quivering for-for-for quake's sake? It-it-it is really a-a-a terrible earthquake!”
“Thank Goodness!” Linda became relaxed. “I had thought my car was breaking down.”
注: quake-prone (容易发生地震的), suspected (察觉到的、怀疑到的)、 panic (恐慌), phobia (恐惧症), phenomenon (现象), sort of = somewhat (有一点), stutter out (口吃说出), quiver = tremble = shudder (发抖), relaxed (轻松), break down (故障)。
