She was daughter of Night, sister of Ares, and goddess of discord.   She went uninvited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, and there threw upon the table a golden apple inscribed For the fairest.  This act led to a bitter quarrel among the goddesses.   Finally, Paris, acting as their judge, awarded the golden apple to Aphrodite, and was rewarded with the love of Helen, which then caused the Trojan War.
