Called Dis or Pluto in Roman mythology, Hades was a son of Cronus and a brother of Zeus.   At the division of the universe after the overthrow of Cronus, Hades took the underworld while Zeus took the sky and the earth, and Poseidon took the sea.   He raped Persephone, took her to the underworld, and made her his wife there.   Today his name also refers to the place of his abode.   But Hades is not the Christian hell, not a place of punishment, but a place of dim and endless dullness with five rivers.
